The team at Cooper Medical Supplies is excited to announce that Katie Estabrooks, our hardworking employee of 4 years, will be taking over as our Senior Compression Garment Specialist. This means that whenever any of our customers have any questions about compression, need a new fitting, or just a renewal, Katie is your gal!
Katie has spent the last 4 years at Cooper Medical serving customers, receiving and stocking inventory, and assisting in compression fittings. She is well equipped to take on the needs of our customers since she has trained to be a certified fitter.
We asked Katie to share a little about compression, as well as some of her tips and tricks.
What can people expect from their first fitting?
“They can expect to learn the ins and outs of compression. They will have various measurements of their legs taken depending on the style of stockings they are ordering.
We’ll discuss what product is best for their lifestyle. Do they want an open or closed toe? What kind of fabric? Are they standing all day long? How functional do they want their stockings to be?”
What do you need to know before a fitting?
“Do you have a prescription, or would you like over-the-counter compression? If so, what level of compression is prescribed? What length or style? Do you have any health issues such as diabetes or blood clots? Do you have any allergies to any materials?”
What should people wear to an appointment?
“It's best to bring along a pair of loose-fitting shorts.”
What are your tips for donning stockings?
“If you have no trouble reaching your feet, or you have someone who can help you put your stockings on, a pair of donning gloves could be enough to help grip the fabric and bring it up your leg. If you have a hard time reaching your feet, or you are very pregnant, there is the Doff N’ Donner or Melany cage that can assist you. If no donning aid is working, there is always the option of home assistance.”
What are your tips for stocking care?
“Wash your stockings daily. Once you wear a compression garment, you’ve stretched those elastic fibers. You need to be rejuvenating them every day for them to do their job properly. The Medi brand is washer/dryer approved, which is nice. If you’re handwashing, you can use a mild laundry detergent and lay them flat to dry. There are also specialized stocking washes.”
What is your favorite part of working at Cooper Medical Supplies?
“The staff. They’re awesome.”
